The Elliot B. Grover Papers include materials documenting Grover's early career in private industry, his consulting work with the Joint Chief of Staff examining German textile and pulp factories in the wake of the Allied advance through that country, and his work as a member of the faculty of the College of Textiles of North Carolina State University (although most of the latter type of material may be found in the records of the college's Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management, UA 130.021). Included are company papers Grover kept from his time as an executive at Ponemah Mills in Connecticut, as well as records from his service in World War II in England and Germany with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, foreign currency from his sojourn during World War II in Europe, and official government notes and reports, from 1925 through 1958. Also included are several undated portrait-style photographs of Grover. Massachusetts native Elliot Brown Grover (1906 - 1997) joined the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) faculty in 1944 as the head of the Yarn Manufacturing Department in the School of Textiles. In 1959, School of Textiles Dean Malcolm E. Campbell appointed Grover the head of the school's new Department of Textile Technology. Grover received an honorary fellowship from the Textile Institute in Manchester, England, the organization's highest honor, in 1962. He authored numerous publications, including the Handbook of Textile Testing and Quality Control (1960). He was active in numerous professional organizations, including Sigma Xi and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Grover retired from the university in 1966. Less

The James K. Ferrell Papers, 1940-2000, include publications, reports, memoranda, a scrapbook, and other items demonstrating the history of the North Carolina State University Dept. of Chemical Engineering and the North Carolina State University College of Engineering (formerly the School of Engineering); annual reports, memoranda, correspondence, proposals, reviews, and other items related to the administration of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering, the College of Engineering, and the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC); and research papers, proceedings, reports, publications, and slides produced through or related to Ferrell's research projects in chemical engineering, the bulk of which pertains to his work on two-phase flow and coal gasification. James K. Ferrell (1923-2001) received the first doctoral degree awarded in chemical engineering by North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1954. After working in industry, Ferrell returned to NC State in 1956. He became a full professor in 1961 and served as head of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering from 1966 to 1980. In 1965, Ferrell was instrumental in bringing the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC) to fruition, a mainframe system that served NC State along with Duke University, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and Research Triangle Park. The Director's office records of the North Carolina State University Libraries contain correspondence and memoranda, budget information, program and event brochures, meeting minutes and agenda, catalogs, and other items recording the administrative functions of the Libraries. It also includes materials regarding the planning, building, and dedication of the James B. Hunt Library. The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure. Less

First established as a distinct college in 1963, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) represents the intellectual core of the university, though it has gone through a series of transformations throughout North Carolina State University’s history. The first English and History courses were offered in 1889, when the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts opened. It wasn’t until 1937 that the departments of English, Modern Languages, History, Sociology, Psychology, and Ethics were all grouped together under the Basic Division. In 1952, the Basic Division was replaced by the School of General Studies, which was also non-degree-granting. However, in 1963 it was renamed again as the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) and was authorized to award degrees. The School of Liberal Arts would again undergo a name change in 1977, becoming the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHASS). Then, in 1987, SHASS was one of eight of the university’s academic schools to be re-designated as a college, becoming the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The name of the department was changed in 1965, when the Department of History and Political Science was divided into two departments, the Department of History and the Department of Politics. In 1972, North Carolina State University publishes "In a Black Perspective." This pamphlet tallied the university's black community at nine professors and 222 students (out of a total 13,809), and listed courses focusing on black history and culture: two in Political Science and one on race relations in Sociology. The Department of Politics was renamed the Department of Political Science in 1977 and in 1980 the Department of Political Science was renamed the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. In 2006, The Department of Political Science and Public Administration divided into two departments, the Department of Political Science and the Department of Public Administration; these two departments comprise the School of Public and International Affairs, within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. As of 2012, the Department of Political Science at North Carolina State University, located in Caldwell Hall, is part of the School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, formerly the School of Liberal Arts.
